Intensive Handbuilding Course
Our Intensive Handbuilding Course is a one week course involving 20 hours of dedicated teaching and studio work in a small group setting. It is ideal for students who want to develop mastery of key ceramics skills and enjoy dedicated time to build a body of work.
Your teacher, Wendy, will lead students during this 20 hour course over 5 days. Sign-up on your own or with a friend - this is an open, friendly environment.
No prior ceramics experience is necessary.
Everything is included. No need to bring anything special with you, just arrive 5 minutes before class. We’ll have an apron ready for you.
Instruction is in Spanish and /or English based on your preferences.
Materials and kiln firings are included. Each student can select 5 items to kiln fire. A few weeks later your finished pieces come out of the kiln and are ready to be picked up.
What you’ll learn and what we’ll do
The course program is 5-four hour classes that are daily Monday - Friday. Each class is designed to introduce and allow investigation of specific techniques during the first two hours. The second two hours allow for individual construction with dedicated instruction specific to each student's work.
You will learn essential handbuilding techniques such as pinching, coil, extrusion, and slab construction. These skills can be combined to create functional and sculptural work. This class will provide the foundation for nearly any handbuilding project.
The course will also introduce various decoration techniques. We will introduce the use of slip, sprigs, carving, and sgraffito as decoration, balancing time and student interest.
The course starts with pinching to create clay forms and then moves into working with coils. You can set your own pace to create interesting and unique work. One of the benefits of coiling is that you are not restricted on form or size so any shape can be created.
You will also learn slab building techniques and get to try working with bigger slabs of clay. These can be mixed with coiling to produce interesting forms. Working with slabs allows adding angles, curves and dips. Plus you can create texture to contrast smooth surfaces.
Throughout the course we will look at other artists who hand build their work and investigate some of the techniques they use. In addition to bowls, cups and vases, you can explore different forms and sculptural pieces.
As your work progresses you will try hands on the decoration techniques introduced throughout the course. We will explore more in depth decoration areas that are of interest to students based on the time available.
By the end of this course you can expect to have learned many clay hand building techniques, but also learned more skills in form and construction plus produced some unique ceramic pieces.
This course is suitable for all levels.
