Our Intensive Introduction to Ceramics course is a one week course involving 20 hours of dedicated teaching and studio work in a small group setting. It is ideal for students who want to receive an in depth introduction to ceramics and begin to develop a broad understanding of artesanal ceramics, ceramics processes and to practice key ceramics skills.

Your teacher, Wendy, will lead students during this 20 hour course over 5 days. Sign-up on your own or with a friend - this is an open, friendly environment. 

No prior ceramics experience is necessary. This course is suitable for beginners and intermediate students wanting to broaden their ceramics knowledge.

Everything is included. No need to bring anything special with you, just arrive 5 minutes before class. We’ll have an apron ready for you.

Instruction is in Spanish and /or English based on your preferences.

Materials and kiln firings are included. Each student can select 5 items to kiln fire. A few weeks later your finished pieces come out of the kiln and are ready to be picked up. 

What you’ll learn and what we’ll do

The course program is 5-four hour classes that are daily Monday - Friday. Each class is designed to introduce a main area of ceramics for the first two hours. The second two hours allow for individual practice with dedicated instruction specific to each student's work.

You will learn about the ceramics process from beginning to end. Main areas of education include:

  • Ceramic studio layout, main equipment and systems
  • Main clay bodies and their differences and use
  • Ceramic firing curves, cone system and firing temperatures
  • Basic glazes and identifying food safe glaze considerations
  • Ceramics processes from start to finish
  • Ceramic studio health and safety
  • Studio plumbing and water management systems
  • Basic construction techniques including pinching, coiling, slab construction
  • Ceramic form construction elements: shape, body, glaze and design
  • Ceramic decoration techniques

You’ll initially learn the ceramics process, professional studio elements and health and safety. Once you have an understanding of the key areas we will gain understanding into clay bodies and building techniques.

As the course advances we will begin reviewing decoration and finishing techniques along with ceramic design elements.

Throughout the course we will look at ceramic form and technique examples so you gain a broad appreciation of artisan ceramics.

As your work progresses throughout the course you will try hands on the decoration techniques introduced throughout the course. We will explore more in depth decoration areas that are of interest to students based on the time available.

By the end of this course you can expect to have a strong basic understanding of the ceramics process, learned hands-on techniques and produced some unique ceramic pieces. The goal is to give you a firm ceramics understanding to select areas of education ceramics to explore in depth.

This course is suitable for beginners and intermediate students wanting to broaden their ceramics knowledge.

Class Ages and Size

Maximum 8 students

Adults and accompanying children ages 16 and older.

Anyone over the age of 16 is welcome to join, but anyone under the age of 18 MUST be accompanied by an adult who is also taking the class.

About Taller Gingell
Taller Gingell is recognized and accredited as being an artisan ceramics workshop by the Generalitat of Catalonia. In addition the workshop is a licensed fine arts academy by the city of Barcelona.

Cermicist - Wendy Gingell

Wendy is a ceramicist whose work has been exhibited in Europe and North America, including at the Smithsonian, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the American Craft Council craft shows. Her ceramics are part of permanent museum collections and private collections in North America and Europe.

She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture and a Bachelor of Art History. She is a current member of the Association of Artists and Craftsmen FAD (A-FAD), the Associació Ceramistes de Catalunya and the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA-USA). She is a ceramic artisan accredited by the Generalitat de Catalunya with Artisan Card number 15,932.

Additional Information

To receive a full refund or to reschedule your course, you must notify eric@tallergingell.com at least 7 days prior to the first class. Within 7 days of the scheduled first class, there will be no refunds for cancellations or no-shows if the space cannot be filled with a new student.

If we get another student before the class starts to take your spot we will refund your payment.

We follow the hygiene and safety measures for the prevention of COVID-19.

Please note that we do have a dog on the premises. Isabel is a 2 year old Labrador - Podenco mix. She is onsite but is not in the studio during the workshop.

Any ceramics work must be picked up within 30 days of notification, we don’t have enough space to keep it longer.

We’ll try real hard for success, but we are not responsible for your ceramic piece failing. Ceramics are complicated and pieces fail. We accept no responsibility.
