About your hosts

I enjoy introducing folks to ceramics, it’s fun. No skills needed, just an interest that’s all. Ceramics let me have some really neat experiences and I like sharing that with folks. Plus my ceramics studio has a disco ball.

I am a ceramic artist and I’ve shown my ceramics in Europe and North America; including at the Smithsonian, Philadelphia Museum of Art and American Craft Council craft shows. My ceramic work is part of permanent museum and private collections in North America and Europe.

I’ve attended international ceramic artist residencies including International Ceramics Workshop, Kesckemet, Hungary; Project Art, Cummington, Massachusetts, USA; A.I.R. Vallauris, Vallauris, France; and Medalta, Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada.

I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Sculpture and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History. I am a current member of the Associació Ceramistes de Catalunya and A-FAD Artists and Artisans’ Association.

My husband Eric and co-owner, who has no experience in ceramics, helps run our studio. Plus there’s Isabel - a troublesome labrador retriever podenco andaluz mix puppy jumping all over the place.

What we’ll do

On arrival we’ll show you our small batch ceramics workshop. Every day we’re here making ceramics for folks. After hearing what your experience and interests are in regards to clay, we'll get going. 15 minutes

We’ll walk through a hands on introduction to different types of ceramics and use. You learn the differences in basic types of clay such as porcelain, stoneware and earthenware. Different design elements, decorating techniques, durability and function. 30 minutes

Let the fun begin.

Out come the aprons, clay and tools to get your hands dirty. I’ll explain the ceramics process and demonstrate three building techniques: coil, slab and pinching. You’ll get to follow along digging in hands-on. 30 minutes

Now’s your time to shine. You'll have over an hour building in the workshop, with me there to help you along the way. My current work is based in functional ceramics and as a result, this will be the path I'll lead you down. However, you're free to create whatever makes you happy.

We can fire up the disco ball and play music chosen by you. We have a fun selection of local Catalan and Spanish musicians – including world class musicians from Poble Sec. 60 minutes

About one week later your finished pieces come out of the kiln are ready to be picked up or mailed to you. Shipping is not included in the workshop fee.

Last, it’s time to clean up to look respectable out on the street. Soap, water and hand washing. 15 minutes

What we’ll provide

Clay, working aprons and all tools are provided.

We offer coffee, water and other refreshments during this workshop.

Keep in mind clay can be messy. It's dirt. Most folks are neat and you can wash up afterwards. Consider what you are wearing it might get a little clay on it. For crazy messy people a change of clothing may be appropriate.

What to bring

Clothing that can get messy or a change of clothing. Aprons and towels are provided.

Music that you would like to listen to while working with clay.

Where you'll be

It takes place in our ceramics workshop “Taller Gingell.” Located in the Poble Sec neighborhood downtown Barcelona. The building is from 1890 and prior to us the space was a bakery for generations. The small 25 m2 studio space is where we work every day making and selling ceramics. We’re 1 minute walk from Blai Street for pintxos, 5 minutes from the metro and 10 minutes from the Ramblas.

Guest requirements

Up to 2 guests ages 18 and up can attend. Please note that we do have a dog that lives on the premises. Isabel is a 8 month old puppy and behaves as such. She is onsite but is not in the studio during the workshop.
